Brighton bus named after YMCA founder following local nomination

A Brighton & Hove bus, 3X, has been named after YMCA founder Sir George Williams.

The newly named bus, number honours the man who founded the YMCA movement in 1844 and was later knighted by Queen Victoria for his contribution to society. YMCA Brighton put his name forward to highlight the organisation’s long-standing role in supporting adults across the city, including those experiencing or facing homelessness.

YMCA Brighton’s George Williams Mews project, also named in his honour, provides supported housing across five shared houses and two blocks of flats for more than 90 residents.

Hélène Begg, CEO of YMCA Brighton, said:
“We are delighted that Sir George Williams has received this unique recognition from Brighton and Hove Buses. His belief in dignity, opportunity and community continues to guide our work with adults across Brighton today. Seeing his name on a city bus is a reminder of the positive change that happens when people are given the support they need to rebuild their lives.”

Rupert Cox, Interim Managing Director for Brighton & Hove Buses, said:
“We’re pleased to name one of our buses after Sir George Williams following YMCA Brighton’s nomination. The organisation plays a vital role in supporting adults across the city, and we’re proud to help shine a light on that work. We hope passengers enjoy spotting the bus and learning more about the impact YMCA Brighton has locally.”
